The pasara is the boat of the Dalmatian coast: a small, open, flat-bottomed boat that fishermen and families here have used for centuries to reach the next cove. Ours keeps the classic shape in a durable, low-maintenance plastic hull with a quiet 6 HP engine, and it is the most charming and the most affordable way to spend a day on the water in Hvar.
It is a slow boat, and that is the point. At about five knots the Pakleni Islands are exactly the right size for it: Jerolim is under ten minutes from our dock, the bays of Marinkovac about a quarter of an hour, and Palmižana a little over half an hour. East of town, Pokonji Dol and Mekićevica are just as close. You putter across the channel, drop the anchor in a bay that takes your fancy, swim off the ladder, and move on when you feel like it. Nobody has ever been in a hurry on a pasara.
The boat takes up to five people and suits couples, small families and friends who want a relaxed, independent day rather than speed. The open layout leaves room for a cool box and beach bags, a bathing ladder makes getting back on board easy, and a compass and full safety kit are on board. Fuel is included in the price, so there is nothing to work out at the end of the day.
You drive it yourself. Croatian law requires a valid boat licence for any motorboat, including this one, and we check it at pick-up; if nobody in your group has one, our skippered boats or a private tour are the way to go. With a licence, the handover takes ten minutes: we show you the controls, mark the best bays on the chart, and tell you where the afternoon wind will be. Pick up at our dock in Hvar harbour, next to the ferry landing, and bring the boat back by the evening.
