Boating Guide

Do you need a boat licence
in Croatia?

A complete guide to Croatian boat licence requirements for tourists renting a boat in Hvar and the Dalmatian coast.

Quick answer

Yes, a valid boat licence is required to rent and operate any motorised boat in Croatia. This applies to all engine sizes — there is no exception for smaller boats. Your home country licence (national or international) is accepted.

What Croatian law says

Croatian maritime law requires all operators of motorised vessels to hold a valid boating licence. This rule applies to all tourists and residents — there are no exemptions based on boat size, engine power, or rental duration.

The harbour master's office conducts regular checks, and operating without a licence can result in fines starting at €500. More importantly, your insurance would be void in case of an incident.

Which licences are accepted?

Croatia accepts a wide range of international boating qualifications:

  • International Certificate of Competence (ICC) — the most common licence for European boaters
  • RYA Day Skipper / Yachtmaster (UK)
  • ASA or US Power Squadrons certificates (USA)
  • SBF-See / SKS (Germany)
  • Permis Côtier (France)
  • Any national boating licence from your home country

Bring your licence with you — we verify it at the marina before handing over the boat.

No licence? No problem

If you don't have a boat licence, you can still experience the Adriatic. Book one of our private tours with a skipper — our experienced local skippers take you to the best spots around Hvar, from the Blue Cave to hidden beaches. You choose the itinerary, they handle the boat.

Safety rules to know

A few important rules when boating in Croatian waters:

  • Speed limit: Maximum 10 knots within 300 metres of shore
  • Alcohol: Operating a boat under the influence is illegal (limit: 0.05% BAC — same as driving)
  • Life jackets: Must be on board for every passenger. Children under 12 must wear them at all times
  • Swimming zones: Do not enter marked swimming areas (yellow buoys)
  • Anchoring: Anchoring is prohibited in certain areas. We brief you on restricted zones and best anchoring spots before departure
