South Shore vs. Blue Cave: Which Hvar Boat Tour is Right for You?

Choosing between the relaxed South Shore & Red Rocks and the iconic Blue Cave & Vis? This expert guide compares Hvar’s best boat tours to help you pick the perfect private experience for your group.

South Shore vs. Blue Cave: Which Hvar Boat Tour is Right for You?

This is the question we hear most often from guests planning their trip to Hvar: Should we do the South Shore tour or the Blue Cave? The honest answer is that they are completely different experiences. The right choice depends on what kind of day you want on the water, who you are travelling with, and how much time you have.

We have been running both routes for many years, so here is our straightforward breakdown.

Quick Decision Guide

Looking for a half-day escape? We offer two 4-hour options: the South Shore only (Red Rocks & hidden bays) or the Pakleni Islands only (beaches & lunch stops). Perfect for fitting into a busy schedule!

Have a full day for a tour? Here is the simplest way to compare our most popular offerings:

  • Choose the South Shore & Pakleni tour - The South Shore is much more relaxing and perfect for families with small children and pregnant ladies, as it stays in sheltered waters close to Hvar.
  • Choose the Blue Cave & Vis tour - This is a bucket-list adventure, but it can be quite exhausting and involves more time on open water. Important: We do not recommend the Blue Cave tour for pregnant ladies due to the longer distances and potential for bouncy sea conditions.

Still not sure? Read on for the full comparison.

The South Shore & Pakleni Tour

The South Shore & Pakleni islands tour is our most popular route for a reason. It packs an incredible amount of variety into a full 8 hours, all within sheltered waters close to Hvar.

What You Will See

  • Red Rocks Hvar — dramatic orange cliffs on Hvar's south coast rising from turquoise water. It is a highlight of any Hvar boat tour, offering perfect platforms for cliff jumping or simply floating in the crystal-clear Adriatic.
  • Dubovica Bay — a stunning pebble beach backed by an old stone house. This is our family's home bay, and our cousins still tend a vineyard on the hillside above.
  • Mekićevica and hidden coves — tucked-away swimming spots along the south coast that you simply cannot reach by land.
  • Pakleni Islands — the iconic archipelago just off Hvar Town, they get their name from 'paklina,' the pine resin once used to waterproof wooden boats. Today, they are a playground for boaters, offering hidden coves and world-class seaside dining.

Duration and Pace

Plan for a full 8 hours. The pace is relaxed. You spend most of the time swimming, snorkelling, and eating rather than cruising. Distances between stops are short, so there is very little time on open water. This makes it ideal if you are prone to seasickness or travelling with young children.

Best For

  • Families with children
  • Couples looking for a day escape
  • Anyone who gets seasick
  • Groups who want a long, leisurely lunch on the islands

The Blue Cave & Vis Tour

The Blue Cave & Vis tour is the big one. This is a full-day adventure that crosses open water to the island of Vis and its smaller neighbour Biševo, home to the famous Blue Cave. It is one of those experiences people plan entire trips around.

What You Will See

  • Blue Cave (Modra Špilja) — the most famous destination for a Blue Cave tour from Hvar. Located on Biševo island, sunlight refracts through an underwater opening, filling the grotto with an ethereal electric blue glow. It's a true natural wonder of the Croatian coast.
  • Green Cave (Zelena Špilja) — on the island of Ravnik, this cave has an opening in its roof that lets sunlight pour in, turning the water inside a vivid emerald green. Unlike the Blue Cave, you can swim inside.
  • Stiniva Beach — a hidden pebble beach enclosed by towering cliff walls with a narrow gap opening to the sea. It was voted the best beach in Europe, and when you see it from the water, you will understand why.
  • Budikovac Blue Lagoon — a shallow, sandy-bottomed lagoon between two small islands, with water so clear it looks computer-generated. The best swimming stop of the day.
  • Komiža — a charming fishing town on the western side of Vis, often included as a lunch stop. Traditional konobas line the waterfront.

Duration and Pace

This is a full-day commitment: a full 8 hours, typically departing around 10:00 and returning by 18:00. You will cover significantly more distance and spend more time cruising between stops. The crossing from Hvar to Biševo takes roughly an hour in good conditions. It is an active, exciting day rather than a lazy one.

Best For

  • Adventurous travellers and bucket-list chasers
  • Groups of friends looking for a full-day experience
  • Anyone who wants to see Vis island and the famous caves
  • Visitors comfortable with longer stretches on open water

Side-by-Side Comparison

Here is how the two tours stack up against each other across the factors that matter most.

Duration

The South Shore tour runs a full 8 hours, but can be break in two half-day tours, making it easy to fit into a single morning or afternoon. The Blue Cave tour takes a full 8 hours and fills an entire day. If you only have a half day in Hvar, the South Shore or Pakleni islands is the clear choice.

Sea Conditions

The South Shore route stays in the protected channel between Hvar and the Pakleni Islands. Even on windier days, these waters remain relatively calm. The Blue Cave route crosses open sea to Vis and Biševo. On calm days it is a smooth ride, but if the wind picks up (particularly the southern jugo), the crossing can be bouncy. We always monitor conditions and will let you know if a Blue Cave trip is not advisable on a given day.

Physical Demands

The South Shore tour is a gentler, more relaxing day on the water, ideal if you want to unwind without much travel time. The Blue Cave tour, while spectacular, is more physically demanding and fills a full 8-hour day with adventure—you will return pleasantly tired after a true 'bucket-list' experience.

Price

The South Shore tour costs less because it uses less fuel and takes less time. The Blue Cave tour is priced higher due to the full-day duration, longer distances, and Blue Cave entrance fees (purchased separately on site). Both tours are private, meaning you book the whole boat for your group and the per-person cost drops as your group gets larger.

Swimming and Snorkelling

Both tours include multiple swim stops with crystal-clear water. The South Shore offers more time in the water relative to the tour length, since the stops are close together. The Blue Cave tour has fewer but more spectacular swim spots, particularly Stiniva and the Budikovac Blue Lagoon. For snorkelling, the Green Cave on the Vis route is hard to beat.

Why Not Do Both?

If you have two or more days in Hvar, the best answer is to do both. They complement each other perfectly. Many of our guests book the South Shore route first as an easier introduction to boating around the islands, then follow it up with the Blue Cave adventure the next day.

If you can only pick one, go with your gut. Do you want relaxation and hidden coves, or adventure and bucket-list sights? Either way, you are in for an incredible day.
