A half-day boat tour from Hvar along the island's wild south coast: four hours, five swim stops, and the same scenery as our full-day Red Rocks tour in a more compact route. It is the tour to choose when you want dramatic coastline without giving up the whole day.
The south shore of Hvar has almost no roads, so its cliffs and coves belong to boats. You run east from the harbour to the Red Rocks, red limestone walls rising from turquoise water, then work along the coast through Velo Zaraće, where a spine of rock like a dragon's back divides two bays, Dubovica, the pebble beach with the old stone house, the tiny fishing hamlet of Mala Milna, and the Borće Green Lagoon with its emerald shallows. Your skipper picks the order and the length of each stop from the conditions and the mood on board, so if one bay has your name on it, you stay.
Morning departures are back by early afternoon, with time for a late lunch in town or at Mala Milna on the way. Afternoon departures catch the low golden light that makes the red cliffs glow, and end just in time for a sunset drink on the riva. Either way the boat is private, up to ten guests, with a skipper who grew up on this coast.
It is also the easiest tour to combine with the rest of a Hvar day: a morning on the boat and an afternoon of wine tasting or the old town, or the reverse. And because every stop is a calm bay close to home, it suits children and first-time boaters as well as it suits swimmers and snorkellers.
